What should I put in the research section for my Science Fair project?

I chose to sign up for Science Fair and my question is: “Given the choice of three types of seeds, which will the birds prefer?” I know how the experiment is going to go and everything like that, but I don’t know what I would do for the section where I’m supposed to put in things to support my hypothesis, and research prior to the actual experiment about birds and their eating habits. It’s supposed to take up two to four pages, double spaced. What should I put about seeds and stuff like that?

If you can answer these questions that’s a good place to start.

What is your hypothesis – that is what do you think will happen and what are you basing this on ? You would write this something like…..I suggest that given the choice of A,B & C the X birds will prefer B due to that fact that B most closely resembles ‘blah’ the seed in the X’s natural diet (or whatever). You will need references here regarding were you got this information.
If you don’t have any idea what will happen that will be because there has been no other research done in this area. This is unlikely.
What kind of birds are you talking about ?
What do these birds eat in their natural habitat ?
How do you know this ?
What kinds of seeds are you using ?
Why are you using these seeds and not others ?
Has anyone else ever used these or other seeds, why, what results did they get ?
It may also be helpful to do a rough draft and get friends and family to try and come up with ‘holes’ or questions for you ?
Also when you are researching, you might come up with other things that other people have discovered , or questions their research raised.

Warning: try to keep to your original question firmly in mind, it can be easy to get sidetracked when you start researching.

    Best of Luck.
